With another month gone, it’s time for a new episode of Five Favorites! In this series we pick our five favorite drone videos from the past month and talk about them for a bit! No real qualifications for our selections – just things we liked or that stood out as special that we wanted to share with the community. Ready to jump in? Let’s do it!
Rotor Riot – RR5 Stop Motion Build
I know that Rotor Riot needs no introduction! However, one of their videos this month, made in partnership with Chris Nauslar, was something entirely different from their normal fare. While we have seen some timelapse videos in the past, as well as a few semi-stop motion builds, the level of detail put into this piece is insane!
The team put together a full stop motion build of one of their RR5 frames. The music fits perfectly, the organization of each of the parts is great, the small details like the props flying onto the motors – just fantastic! If you are looking for an interesting take on putting together a quad, give it a watch.
UAVFutures – Happy Flying: Throttle Control
Another man who needs no introduction. Stew pumps out a ridiculous amount of quality content, and this month is no different. While his bench reviews take a great look at products, I thoroughly enjoy his Happy Flying series for his insight on flying. He discusses interesting topics while showing some related flight footage that is usually targeted at newer pilots.
I felt his recent throttle control video did a fantastic job at discussing an important aspect of the hobby that can be hard to describe correctly. It’s easy to say, “control your throttle, practice flying in a straight line without going up or down”, but really that doesn’t help give any practical advice. Instead, Stew flies through a course designed to improve throttle control while discussing the importance and setup of the exercise. If you are starting out and want some advice on how better to manage your throttle to hit gates – this is the video for you!
ThatHPI GUY – Korea Drone World Cup
Looking for some racing footage this month? I really enjoyed HPI GUY’s Korea Drone World Cup run; mainly due to how he cut the video. He switches perspective between his FPV camera and his HD camera to show both the race footage and a clearer picture of the track. It allows the viewer insight into what it is like to fly the race live, as well as just how crazy the course looks from a ‘clearer’ perspective. I especially like how instead of the picture in picture view we sometimes get, he instead cut the footage at the gates in full screen to give a bit of love to both views.
Bulbufet FPV – Race Against the Sun
You guys know I am a sucker for well edited videos tied to music. Well Bulbufet put together an aptly titled video where he flies around a waterpark at sunset. The music, “Against the Sun”, clearly fits perfectly here. Even though it’s November, the video has an end of summer feel to it with the combination of setting sun and empty water slides. Speaking of water slides – what a cool location! The looping slides make for an interesting vertical course that looks like a ton of fun to fly!
GAPiT FPV – Pop quiz, HOTSHOT!
GAPiT makes a return to our five favorites list this month. We previously spotlighted his “Jekyll & Hyde” video in September, and he continues to impress! Instead of cruising a mountain range like last video, GAPiT takes it into the city and rips it up under the freeway! Another aptly named video, paying homage to the masterpiece movie that is “Speed”, GAPiT found a freeway with a cut-off section perfect for flying. Without any cars (or buses!) around, he made great use of the area safely! I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone fly over a freeway and thought it was cool instead of extremely dangerous.
Other than the awesome flying, I think the main takeaway here is keeping your eyes open for unique flying spots. Knowing me, I would have lost the quad on top of the overpass and would have needed Keanu to pick it up for me.
What were your favorite drone videos from November?
